Busting Botox Myths

Busting Botox®Myths!

There are a lot of misconceptions and myths surrounding Botox, but did you know that Botox has been used for medical and cosmetic purposes for 30 years and has undergone numerous clinical trials to ensure safety and efficacy? Many people believe that Botox is dangerous, painful or will result in a “frozen” look, but we’re here to set the record straight. Ready to bust some Botox myths? Here we go!

  1. Botox is Painful:

It’s a common misconception that Botox injections are painful. Many patients are pleasantly surprised to know that the injections are very tolerable. An insulin syringe is used to administer the Botox which has an extremely small needle and the treatment only takes a couple of minutes!

  1. Botox Will Cause an Un-natural or Frozen Look:

Have you seen Christmas with the Kranks where Tim Allen shows up to dinner with “Spock” eyebrows and can’t chew his food because he just got Botox? Yeah, that’s not how it works! When properly injected, Botox should provide a more youthful and refreshed look by softening dynamic and static lines (Wrinkle 101: Dynamic lines are wrinkles made with movement and static lines are wrinkles at rest). It takes a lot more than just Botox to create an un-natural or frozen look.

  1. Botox is Dangerous and Toxic:

Botox is an FDA approved treatment, not just for wrinkles, but also for Cervical Dystonia (involuntary neck spasms), chronic migraines and underarm hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). It’s true that Botox is a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. This toxin can only spread rapidly and cause damage when in excessive amounts. Science has been able to take this protein and dilute or weaken it so that it could be injected into facial muscles to temporarily prevent the release of neurotransmitters to the neuromuscular junction causing paralysis of the muscle.

  1. Botox Can Treat Any and Every Wrinkle:

Botox is used to relax muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles in the Frontalis (forehead) Glabella (between the eyebrows) and Lateral Canthus (crow’s feet). Botox is not the treatment for volume loss and wrinkles in the lower face. Other treatments such as lasers, dermal filler, microneedling, etc. can help provide more volume to the lower face as well as diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

  1. Botox will Erase All of My Wrinkles Immediately:

Botox is such an incredible treatment, but it is best when used in conjunction with medical grade skincare and other skincare treatments to provide the best possible result for your skin. Dynamic wrinkles eventually cause static wrinkles. It takes muscles years to create those static wrinkles, and it will take time for Botox and other treatments to soften them as well.  Botox also takes 2 weeks for full effect, so plan accordingly!
